Milazzo in a nutshell
Milazzo lies on the north coast of Sicily, on the headland between the Gulf of Patti and the Gulf of Milazzo. Most visitors come for the port. Fast passenger boats and conventional ferries sail from here to the Aeolian Islands: Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi. The town itself deserves more than a transfer. It has a fortified old town with a castle on the hill, a palm-lined waterfront (the Lungomare Garibaldi) and the Capo Milazzo, a cape of cliffs, a lighthouse and a rock pool called the Piscina di Venere.
This guide covers Milazzo only: ferry and hydrofoil times and tickets, boat tours, the cape, the castle, where to stay and how to get here from Catania Airport. For the bigger picture, see the guides to the Aeolian Islands, to Stromboli and to Catania Airport. This is not the official tourism website of Milazzo.

Good to know
Things that changed or that catch visitors out in 2026.
New castle hours
The municipality announced on 25 September 2026 that from 1 October the castle opens daily from 09:00 to 18:30 until further notice. Older pages still show split summer hours, so check the sign at the gate. Short closures happen for events and pest control.
Swimming bans
For the 2026 season the municipality lists stretches where swimming is banned, including the harbour areas and about 100 m east of the mouth of the Torrente Mela. Several other coastal stretches are closed for safety reasons. Follow the signs rather than a map in a guidebook.
Seasonal timetables
The Liberty Lines plan for the Aeolian Islands runs from 1 October 2026, and the Siremar plan covers 1 to 31 October. Summer timetables have ended, so check the current plan before you travel.
Weather
There is no weather station in Milazzo. As a regional guide, Messina averages a daily high of 31.4 °C in August and 24.0 °C in October (1991 to 2020). July is the driest month with 19.8 mm, while October brings 106.1 mm and November 126.8 mm of rain on average.
City bus
The SAIS city buses cost €1.20 for a single ticket and €3.50 for a day ticket valid until midnight. Line 6 stops opposite the Chiesa del Rosario, close to the castle.

The first bus from Milazzo port to Catania leaves at 05:30 in the summer timetable of 2026. The journey takes about 2 hours.

How far is Milazzo from Catania Airport?
The direct bus takes about 2 hours and costs €13 one way or €26 return in 2026. Regional trains run from the airport towards Messina, but the full rail journey depends on the connection, so check it for your date.
Is the castle open in October 2026?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026 the municipality lists daily opening from 09:00 to 18:30 until further notice. Adult entry costs €7. Check the hours on site, because they have changed this autumn.
Can I swim around Capo Milazzo?
In places. The municipality publishes banned stretches each season, and the marine protected area has its own rules for boats, jet skis and anchoring. Read the signs at each access point.
Is visit-milazzo.org the official tourism site?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the municipality, the park authority, any ferry company or tour operator.
