Milazzo Castle in short

The castle, also called the Città Murata (walled city), is the fortified citadel above Milazzo. The access is the Salita Castello. Treat it as one stop in a day that may also include the ferry port and the cape.

This is an independent guide. It is not the website of the municipality or of the castle. Prices and hours below are those published by the municipality in September 2026.

Opening hours: two versions

The municipality has published two sets of hours. A notice dated 25 September 2026 says that from 1 October the citadel is open every day from 09:00 to 18:30, until further notice. The notice names no weekly closing day. The town's castle page, updated on 18 September 2026, still lists Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 13:30 and from 16:00 to 20:30.

The two do not match. The safe plan is to arrive in the morning and leave by 18:30, and to check the sign at the entrance if you want the evening hours.

Short-notice closures happen. The castle shut on 29 August 2026 to set up a concert, with restrictions the following Monday until 16:00. A pest-control closure was announced for 28 September 2026 from 08:00 to 13:00. Neither is a regular closing day.

Getting there and getting in

On foot, by bus or by car.

On foot

The access is by the Salita Castello. The municipality notes physical obstacles for people with limited mobility, so do not count on step-free access everywhere.

By bus

The municipality names city bus line 6 for the castle, with the stop opposite the Chiesa del Rosario. SAIS runs the city buses: €1.20 for a single ticket and €3.50 for a day ticket in 2026. Check the current timetable before you go.

By car

A car park on Via Impallomeni, serving the Borgo (old town), opened in March 2026 with 81 spaces. At the opening it was free with a one-hour parking disc, with a later change to about €0.80 an hour announced. Check the sign for the current rule. The town also has paid street parking, and the rules change, so read the signs.

Works at the castle

The castle reopened on 1 May 2026. At that point visitors could enter only on foot, because works were still going on inside the grounds. Works may still affect some areas, so if a section is fenced off, follow the signs.

Dress for the weather and bring water in summer. In the climate averages for Messina, the nearest official station, daily highs reach 30.9 °C in July and 31.4 °C in August, and October brings 106.1 mm of rain on average. These are regional averages, not a forecast. In summer, go early.

Fitting the castle into a ferry day

The citadel works well when you have a few free hours at the port.

Many visitors reach Milazzo for a boat to the Aeolian Islands. If your boat leaves in the afternoon, the castle fills the morning. In the October 2026 plan, for example, the Siremar ferry to Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli leaves Milazzo at 14:30 on Mondays and Thursdays, and the Liberty Lines hydrofoil plan lists Lipari departures through the afternoon and evening, up to 19:15. Timetables change by season, so check the current plan.

If you arrive from the airport first, the Giuntabus from Catania takes about 2 hours and costs €13 one way. See Catania Airport for the airport side. Leave luggage at your hotel before you climb to the castle, and allow time to be back at the pier 15 to 30 minutes before departure.
